The Texas Dog Owner's Summer Guide

Austin basically runs on dogs. You can't walk two blocks without passing a patio full of pups, and the city's parks and outdoor culture make it one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country.

• Zilker Park 350 acres with off-leash areas, walking trails, and access to Barton Springs. Bring a towel. Your dog will swim.
• Barton Creek Greenbelt Hiking, rock climbing, swimming holes. Leash required, but the trails leading to Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls are worth every step.
• Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Off-leash area with scenic downtown views. Peak people-watching for you, peak sniff-watching for them.
• Blue Starlite Drive-In Yes, you can bring your dog to a drive-in movie. They just can't bark at the screen, the cars, or the moon. Fair.
• Mueller Farmers Market Sunday morning, 120+ vendors, fully dog-friendly. The best way to start a weekend.

Houston's a big city, and navigating it with a dog takes a little planning — especially in the heat. But the payoff is real. Great parks, dog-friendly patios, and a surprisingly active outdoor scene.

• Memorial Park Arboretum 155 acres of urban nature sanctuary. Leashed pets welcome on trails and in the building lobby.
• Discovery Green Dog Parks The Kinder Large Dog Run and Harriet & Joe Foster Small Dog Run are right downtown, with crushed gravel, fountains, and seating for pet parents.
• Galveston Beach An hour out, but worth it. East Beach and Stewart Beach both welcome dogs. Go early morning before the heat hits.
• Axelrad Beer Garden Picnic tables, food trucks, occasional live music, dog watering stations. A full afternoon right here.
• Bayou Trail System Miles of scenic walking routes winding through the city. A great daily option when you need more than a neighborhood loop.

Dallas is more dog-friendly than people give it credit for. Great trail systems, off-leash parks, and a food and bar scene that genuinely welcomes dogs on their patios.

• Katy Trail A mostly flat, paved urban trail that cuts through some of Dallas's best neighborhoods. Great for a morning run or casual weekend walk.
• Mutts Canine Cantina Part off-leash dog park, part bar and restaurant, part event venue. You get a cold drink, your dog gets to run free. Peak Dallas.
• White Rock Lake Scenic lake with trails around the perimeter, open fields, and plenty of space to let dogs be dogs (on leash).
• Terry Black's BBQ Dog-friendly patio with the kind of brisket smell that will make your dog your best friend and your enemy simultaneously.
• Bishop Arts District Walkable, charming, full of dog-friendly patios. Great for an evening wander.

Fort Worth doesn't always get the spotlight when it comes to dog-friendly cities, but it should. Massive parks, nature trails, and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to bring your dog basically everywhere.

• Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge Over 20 miles of trails through forested, prairie, and canyon terrain. One of the most underrated outdoor spots in the DFW area. Leash required, six-foot max.
• Trinity Park Classic, sprawling, shaded. Easy going for all ages and all dogs.
• Lake Grapevine About 8,000 acres with hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and a floating water park. A full dog-friendly day trip in one spot.
• McKinney Farmers Market Saturday mornings through fall, dog-friendly, 60+ vendors. Worth the short drive from Fort Worth.

San Antonio is one of those cities that surprises you. The River Walk, the historic districts, and the park system are all way more dog-friendly than you'd expect from a city built around a landmark that doesn't let dogs in.

• San Antonio River Walk Leashed dogs are welcome along the public paths. Plenty of dog-friendly patios to stop at along the way.
• Brackenridge Park 341 acres with open space, water fountains, and waste bags actually provided by the park.
• Hops & Hounds Beer garden with dog runs and pup-friendly snacks. The name really does say it all.
• McNay Art Museum Grounds The galleries are off-limits, but the outdoor sculptures and renovated landscape are fair game for leashed dogs. The Sole Sitter sculpture alone is worth the trip.
• Historic Pearl Farmers Market Weekends, multiple dog boutiques, great energy. Grab a coffee and wander.

Corpus is the Gulf Coast city that actually deserves more attention from dog owners. The beach access alone makes it a standout, and the laid-back local dining scene has fully embraced dogs.

• Padre Island National Seashore 60+ miles of beach where leashed dogs are welcome. One of the few national seashores that actually lets dogs on the beach. Camping permitted too.
• McGee Beach Right downtown, manicured sand, calm water, easy access. A good low-key beach day close to everything.
• North Beach Just north of downtown near the Texas State Aquarium. Leash required, paved multiuse trail alongside the beach.
• South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center Leashed dogs welcome on all trails, sidewalks, and pathways. Open seven days a week.
• Local Brewery Patios The Corpus brewery scene is inherently dog-inclusive. Expect water bowls, outdoor seating, and brisket smells in the air.

McAllen is the hidden gem of this list. South Texas doesn't get talked about much in the dog-friendly conversation, but the city has a solid park system, a warm dog culture, and a few genuinely great spots.

• McAllen Dog Park Fully fenced off-leash facility with separate sections for large and small dogs, shade trees, benches, and water fountains. Free, open daily 6am–10pm.
• McAllen Nature Center 33-acre preserve with native habitat trails, butterfly gardens, and shaded rest spots. Peaceful and undervisited.
• Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park Hiking, biking, camping, and bird photography with your leashed pup alongside you. Genuinely beautiful.
• McAllen Food Park Dog-friendly outdoor dining downtown. Casual, local, easy.
• 5x5 Brewing Co Live music nightly, pet-friendly, and the food is legitimately good.
