What Is a Dog Stick Library (and Why Does My Dog Lose His Mind Over It)
I was doom scrolling Instagram and stopped on a video of a dog pulling a stick off a peg. Just walked up, figured it out, pulled it off. The dog's reaction and the simplicity of the thing got me at the same time. My first thought was: this is so clever. My second thought was: why isn't this in every dog park already?
It reminded me of those neighborhood book swaps, the little free libraries people put at the end of their driveways. Same energy. Something small, community-minded, and oddly charming. Except for dogs. And sticks.
I looked it up. Nobody was selling it as an actual product. So I made one, my friends told me I should sell it, and here we are.
So what actually is it?
A Dog Stick Library is a freestanding stick dispenser. Dogs walk up, pull a stick off a peg, and walk away like they own the place. It's not a box full of sticks. It's not a sign that says "take a stick." It's interactive. The dog does the thing themselves.
That's the part that makes it different from everything else out there, and honestly the part that makes people stop in their tracks when they see it in person. There's something about watching a dog figure it out. The sniff, the nudge, the pull. that is objectively delightful to witness.
How does it work?
The sticks sit on pegs mounted to the front panel. Dogs approach, sniff around, pick their stick, and pull it off. No human required. The whole thing is freestanding and anchors to a post, fence, or the ground with our Ground Anchor add-on.
You load it with sticks, your dog empties it, you reload. It's the most sustainable toy your dog will ever have. The sticks come from your yard, your walks, wherever. Free, endlessly replaceable, and Tito approved.
Why dogs actually love it
- It's interactive Dogs aren't just receiving a stick. They're pulling it themselves. That engagement is the whole point. It activates their natural foraging instinct in a way a stick just sitting on the ground doesn't.
- It gives them a job Dogs need things to do. A Dog Stick Library gives them a task with a satisfying outcome. Go get the stick. Mission accomplished. Life is good.
- It's endlessly novel Different sticks, different days, different smells. It never gets old because it's never exactly the same twice.
- It stops the random stick hoarding If you have a dog who collects sticks on walks and brings them home until your yard looks like a beaver den. This gives that energy a designated outlet.
Where do people put them?
Backyards are the most common, anchored to a fence post, set up near the dog door, ready to go whenever. But a lot of our customers are businesses: Airbnbs, doggy daycares, dog-friendly coffee shops, apartment complexes with dog runs. We've shipped to a private jet company and a realtor who gives them as housewarming gifts.
The Dog Stick Library comes in Grey, Beige, and Paint Your Own. The Ground Anchor add-on lets you install it anywhere without a fence or post. Shop the full collection here.
A stick is just a stick. Until your dog pulls it off a peg themselves.
